<![CDATA[The Criterion Collection Streams Horror Movie Masterpieces All October in Halloween Celebration]]> The countdown to Halloween is on! It’s finally fall, and The Criterion Collection is getting in on the spooky celebration. All month long in October, film fans can watch some of the best pre-code, arthouse and 90s horror flicks on The Criterion Channel. For a brief stint in Hollywood, at the end of the silent era and the beginning of the talkies, there wasn’t a Hays Code in place to monitor content being featured in the movies of that time period. And a plethora of truly entertaining pre-code horror gems were released before censorship guidelines were finally put in place. One of the best examples of these pre-code movies comes in 1931’s Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. And Fredric March even won the Best Actor in a Leading Role Oscar for his performance in the titular role.

<![CDATA[The Criterion Collection Explained: What it is and Why it's So Important]]> When browsing the media section at Barnes & Noble, one may find themselves drawn to a section filled with classic and contemporary films bearing the name Criterion Collection. While some of these titles carry worldwide recognition and others more on the obscure side, they all share two things in common - their expensive price tag and cult-like following among cinema lovers. Whether talking to a film buff at your favorite low-key movie theater or a recent film graduate looking to impress anyone in earshot with his or her expansive film knowledge, the Criterion brand carries a lot of weight and will likely be brought up more than once under the proper circumstances.

<![CDATA[The Best Movies to Start with on the Criterion Channel]]> As far back as the mid-eighties, Criterion has been responsible for restoring and preserving some of the most influential cinema across the world. Many of the now-classic titles it carries might have been lost to time otherwise, and the service has become a go-to for film collectors and aficionados everywhere. Despite this wonderful legacy, though, being the premier curator of international and arthouse cinema does mean that Criterion's reputation sometimes gets ahead of itself - "a film lover's dream" is indeed the site's tagline. Despite the wide array of films available in both the Collection and on the Channel, the service can certainly be intimidating for those who are just getting into classic/international cinema and don't know where to start. Here are some films streaming on the Criterion Channel that are both accessible and will give a great idea of what the service has to offer.

<![CDATA[Why John Water's Pink Flamingos Is Still Considered Shocking in 2022]]> Scrolling through a list of the most shocking or disturbing films of all time, like this one from Complex, there aren't too many surprises. Outside a few exceptions, most of the films are intense dramas (Requiem for a Dream), torture porn (Hostel), J-horror (most of Takashi Miike's filmography), or good old-fashioned exploitation flicks (Cannibal Holocaust). One of those outliers, and the highest-ranking aberration on this list, is John Waters' 1972 film, Pink Flamingos. It's the oldest film in the top ten of Complex's list, but that's not what makes it stand out. What's truly notable about Pink Flamingos, in this case, is that it's a comedy, not a horror film like most of the list.
