Just this month, Netflix released Leave the World Behind, an apocalyptic thriller film written and directed by Sam Esmail, based on Rumaan Alam's 2020 novel. This film, co-produced by Esmail with Barack and Michelle Obama, follows Amanda and Clay, a couple who rent an exclusive residence near the sea to enjoy a few days in the company of their children. However, their getaway is interrupted by an overnight visit from the homeowner and his daughter, who seek refuge following a mysterious power outage caused by a cyberattack. But as hours pass, and technology steadily malfunctions, these two families must come to terms with an impending global meltdown for which they are totally unprepared.
