Live-action anime adaptations have had a mixed history. While there have been several flops, a number of more recent successes have signaled hope. Netflix's adaptation of One Piece is but one example of how live-action can amplify the existing story, bringing the characters to life in new and interesting ways, and there are many more out there, like Gintama and Ruroni Kenshin for a viewer wanting more. Many of the most popular anime have received this treatment, with more on the way. However, live-action adaptations usually only go to the big hitters, with filmmakers often overlooking some of the less recognizable fan-favorites.
