Despite Spanish being one of the most spoken languages in the world, Spanish-language cinema and television shows have been vastly underrated on the global stage — until recently. Although many know about the existence of telenovelas, a distant counterpart to the various forms of soap dramas that have manifested across many different countries, other forms of entertainment haven’t been getting as much love. Filmmakers like Alfonso Cuaron and Guillermo del Toro have been making names for filmmakers out of Latin America, putting these kinds of movies and television shows increasingly on the map.
