DC Zatanna Writer Confirms Movie Is Dead

There’s nothing magical about writer Emerald Fennell’s Zatanna vanishing, but it’s happened all the same. Before the conception of Peter Safran and James Gunn’s upcoming DC Universe (DCU), Fennel wrote a script for what was supposed to be the first big-screen adaptation of the DC Comics character. But while visiting with Josh Horowitz on the latest episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Fennell confirmed that her Zatanna will not be a part of the DCU. Fennell said:

While the appointment of James Gunn and Peter Safran brought a lot of attention to the DCU, Warner Bros. Pictures obviously has some other branches of the DC franchise that are still very alive and kicking. As well as the upcoming sequel to Joker, there is also a whole universe being built around Matt Reeves’ The Batman, which made quite an impact on cinemas and has a number of spin-offs in development. One of those will be based around the infamous Arkham Asylum, but it seems that the direction of the series is now heading towards Gunn and Safran's DCU continuity.

Although the Matt Reeves-directed Dark Knight franchise will continue with spin-off shows and a sequel, it will not be part of the main DC Universe and is instead an Elseworlds project.
